When I told my father that I was moving to Des Moines, Iowa, he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s, when he was an editor of the literary magazine of Southern Methodist University(SMU) in Dallas, Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU, and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious back disease. She couldn't afford the operation because her family was poor.

Her mother ran a boardinghouse in Galveston, a seaside town near Houston, Texas. She was cleaning out the attic(阁楼) one day when she came across an old dusty manuscript(手稿). On its top page were the words, “By O. Henry.” It was a nice story, and she sent it to her daughter at SMU, who showed it to my father. My father had never read the story before, but it sounded like O. Henry, and he knew that O. Henry had once lived in Houston. So it was possible that the famous author had gone to the beach and stayed in the Galveston boardinghouse, and had written the story there and left the manuscript behind by accident. My father visited an O. Henry expert at Columbia University in New York, who authenticated the story as O. Henry's.

My father then set out to sell it. Eventually, he found himself in Des Moines, meeting with Gardner Cowles, a top editor at the Des Moines Register. Cowles loved the story and bought it on the spot. My father took the money to the girl. It was just enough for her to have the operation she so desperately needed.

My father never told me what the O. Henry story was about. But I doubt that it could have been better than his own story.

  29. Who found the O. Henry's manuscript?

  A. The girl's mother. B. The author's father.

  C. The girl. D. The author.

  30. Which of the following might explain the fact that the manuscript was found in the attic?

  A. O. Henry once worked in Houston.

  B. O. Henry once stayed in Galveston.

  C. O. Henry once moved to Des Moines.

  D. O. Henry once taught at SMU.

  31. The underlined word “authenticated” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.

  A. treated B. discovered C. proved D. described

  32. According to the text, why did the author's father go to Des Moines?

  A. To sell the O. Henry story.

  B. To meet the author himself.

  C. To talk with the O. Henry expert.

  D. To give money to the girl.

  C

I am sure we’ve all come across inspiring quotes that made us nod in agreement or made us think, “Wow, that’s good quotes”. But we end up going back to procrastinating(拖延)on whatever it was we were procrastinating on. So are these inspirational quotes even worth reading? Well, that depends.

Quotes, books, articles, audio programs… all of these things are just tools and they’re only effective when you use them. I don’t know about you but most quotes I read don’t do anything for me. However, every now and then, I will come across one that will positively affect me in some way such as reminding me to be grateful, getting me to work out extra hard at the gym without being pressed by my wife, or never give up when things get tough.

From my experience, reading quotes is more effective when you’re actually trying to motivate yourself rather than just reading them for the sake of reading them. The second you feel the urge to take action, you’d better immediately get up off your chair and take action.

These quotes aren’t for everyone. If you have read tons of them and have never been motivated or had a positive change in the way you look at life or how you treat others, or these quotes don’t help you to insist on doing something when you feel like giving up on it, then it’s probably not worth your time reading more of them. If you have done something a bunch of times and it’s not giving you the results you want, don’t keep doing it. Try something else.

Now if you’ve found some value in reading these quotes in the past, continue to make them more effective by letting them guide your life.

  33. What attitude does the author have towards most quotes he has read?

  A. Negative. B. Grateful. C. Doubtful. D. Interested

  34. For whom will the quotes be effective according to the author?

  A. Those who understand them thoroughly.

  B. Those who lack practical tools in life.

  C. Those who have no one to turn to for help.

  D. Those who take immediate action after reading them.

  35. What is implied in Paragraph 4?

  A. Some quotes may have a bad influence on people.

  B. You shouldn’t waste time on the things you don’t like.

  C. Many ways can motivate you besides reading inspiring quotes.

  D. You’d better keep away from a quote if it doesn’t benefit you.

  36. What is the purpose of the passage?

  A. To persuade people not to waste time on quotes.

  B. to explain how to make inspiring quotes effective.

  C. to encourage people to read more inspiring quotes.

  D. to give people advice on how to choose useful quotes.

  D

Ever feel like you’ve been hit on the head after a bad night’s sleep? According to scientists, the thought isn’t as unbelievable as it seems.

A study found going without sleep for just one night causes changes in the brain similar to those that occur after a blow to the head. The researchers said the healthy young men examined in the study showed a sudden increase in the same chemicals which indicate brain damage. Professor Christian Benedict, of Uppsala University, Sweden, explained that the chemicals NSE and S-100B are biomarkers(生物指标) for brain damage, such as concussion(脑震荡). He said, “What we found was their levels in the blood rose in the group that went without sleep for a night. This was not to the extent that would happen after a head injury, for instance, but it was still significant. During sleep, the brain cleans poisonous substances off itself.

Benedict also said previous studies which linked a lack of sleep with increased risk of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis could applaud his study. The rise of the chemicals in the blood after sleep loss may suggest not getting enough sleep contributes to a loss of brain tissue, he explained. Benedict, whose study is published in the journal Sleep, added, “In conclusion, the findings of our experiment indicate a good night’s sleep may be critical to maintaining brain health.”

A third of the UK population suffer from sleep-related problems, while the average person now sleeps for only seven hours a night, compared with almost nine a few decades ago. Many scientists believe irregular sleeping patterns lead to illnesses ranging from aches and pains to heart disease, while less than eight hours’ sleep a night can lower the IQ the next day.

  37. If you don’t sleep for a night, what will happen?

  A. NSE and S-100B will increase. B. The brain damage will be like a head injury.

  C. You will suffer from concussion. D. The brain will get rid of poisonous substances.

  38. What do we know about previous studies?

  A. They found reasons for brain disorders. B. Their findings were published in Sleep.

  C. They were supported by Benedict’s study. D. They focused on brain health.

  39. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

  A. People in the UK have the worst sleep in the world.

  B. Man’s intelligence is affected by sleep in a way.

  C. A lack of sleep causes all brain-related problems.

  D. People were more intelligent in the past.

  40. What’s the main idea of the passage?

  A. Eight hours’ sleep is important.

  B. Regular-sleeping patterns improve health.

  C. Sleep loss is close to a blow to the head.

  D. Human brains work during sleep.

  第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Rebel has three meanings according to my dictionary: 1) a person who fights against the government of their country. 2) a person who opposes somebody in authority over them within an organization, a political party, etc. 3) a person who does not like to obey rules or who does not accept normal standards of behavior, dress, etc. Today, 41 .

Some might say, rebels are the destroyers of our normal society. To some extent, yes, they are. 42 In my view, every step of advance has rebels’ significant contribution.

I have seen a TED talk, from which a man, born in an Islamic family, talked about his father who was an IS member took him to have a drill, using a sniper rifle to shoot a target, when he was about 10 years old. 43 Of course, his father was a militant and had plotted a bombing attack. But as the man grew up, he found that his family was not going in a right way. Then he left his family, changed his beliefs and gave a TED talk, which shows that he is not a militant like his father.

44 Yes, The Son is not like The Father. Isn’t his son a rebel that didn’t obey his family’s rules and the standards of his father’s behavior? If not, what would happen? 45 Just because we have those rebels who can see the drawbacks and flaws of their families, they can replace them with virtues, revise their ideas, and change the lines of their beliefs. So, we couldn’t criticize a rebel more. Suppose they could change our future to a better one, should we give them a chance to do what they want?

  A. They, the rebels, are hopes instead, in my view.

  B. And also because of that, our society moves forward.

  C. I think from this story you could get the gist of what I am going to talk about.

  D. No doubt, another militant or terrorist came out from his family.

  E. Each family has something imperfect which needs to revise.

  F. I only want to talk about the third meaning of the word rebel and discuss the significance of being it.

  G. Finally, he hit the target, and his uncles around him praised him as: The Father, The Son.

  参考范文

  Dear Sir/Madam,

I have read your advertisement in the newspaper. You mentioned in it that your guitar teachers are fully qualified and you ensure that learners will be able to play the guitar after one month’s learning.

I love singing but I’ve never played musical instruments. So I’m interested in taking part in the course. Fortunately, the summer holiday is around the corner. I’m writing to inquire when and where the course will be given, and how long it will last each day. I also want to know how much you will charge me for that.

Besides, would you be so kind as to tell me whether there is anything special that should be prepared or does your company provide everything necessary?

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

  Yours sincerely,

  Li Hua
