  Ⅲ. 完型填空 (1×20, 共20分)

The purpose of an application letter is to help you to “sell” yourself. It should state 41 the job you want, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have 42 . It should be simple, human, personal and brief without 43 any necessary fact.

In writing a letter of application, keep in 44 that the things a possible employer is most 45 to want to know about are your qualifications(资历), your achievements and your aims. The 46 paragraph is perhaps the most important part. If the first few sentences fail to 47 the reader’s attention, the rest of the letter may not be 48 at all. Try to focus your opening remarks on the needs or interests of the employer not 49 your own needs or desires. For example, instead of beginning with “I saw your 50 in today’s paper.” you might say “I have made a careful 51 of your advertising during the past six months” or “I have made a survey in my 52 to find out how many housewives use your product and why they like it.”

Try to 53 generalities. Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now

54 . College graduates looking for their first positions often ask “What can I 55 in a letter? Employers want experience, which, naturally, no 56 has.” The answer is that everything you have ever done is 57 .

It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter. 58 a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. An excellent 59 is to enclose(内附) a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your letter. That makes it 60 for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

  41. A. clearly B. carefully C. obviously D. easily

  42. A. found B. done C. known D. heard

  43. A. sending out B. taking out C. leaving out D. picking out

  44. A. brain B. sight C. order D. mind

  45. A. probable B. possible C. likely D. able

  46. A. last B. closing C. latest D. opening

  47. A. pay B. win C. show D. fix

  48. A. kept B. continued C. written D. read

  49. A. on B. for C. into D. from

  50. A. advertisement B. report C. article D. introduction

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can appear when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient(高效).

“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度)”,said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope(放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”

Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.

“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”

His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.

“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”

Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, reduce its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

  68. Which of the following is true of Jae Kwon?

  A. He teaches chemistry at MU.

  B. He developed a chemical battery.

  C. He is working on a nuclear energy source.

  D. He made a breakthrough in computer engineering.

  69. Jae Kwon gave examples in Paragraph 4 _______.

  A. to show chemical batteries are widely applied

  B. to indicate nuclear batteries can be safely used

  C. to describe a nuclear-powered system

  D. to introduce various energy sources

  70. Liquid semiconductor is used to _______.

  A. get rid of the radioactive waste

  B. test the power of nuclear batteries

  C. decrease the size of nuclear batteries

  D. reduce the damage to lattice structure

  71. According to Jae Kwon, his nuclear battery _______.

  A. uses a solid semiconductor B. will soon replace the present ones

  C. could be extremely thin D. has passed the final test

My wife, Sheri, and I have been parents for over 20 years now, and I can say that raising three children has been one of the greatest joys I have ever experienced in my life, and probably the greatest challenge. The main part of that challenge for both of us has been learning to parent our children in a way that is completely foreign to the way that we ourselves were parented.

In fact, let me take you back to a time long, long ago. In a day when dinosaurs existed on the earth—OK, no, not quite that far back—there were two young people named Danny and Sheri. These two, not long after getting married, were given the gift of a precious little child, and they named her Brittney. Now, these two people didn’t have Clue #1 on how to raise a child, but that has never been one of qualifiers for having one. You see, in California, anyone can have a child. It is as easy as going fishing, except there is no license required. There are no seasons when you can or cannot have a child, and there is no limit to how many you can bring home. Of course, Danny and Sheri had seen some children raised (in fact, they themselves were raised), but they were never taught how to love a child. Instead, like most children, their observations of the world around them growing up led them to conclude that survival in life mostly comes down to attempting to successfully imitate others in your environment. So that is what they set out to do. When they became parents, they started to imitate other parents’ behavior. But unfortunately, after a couple years, they were still clueless about what a good parent was supposed to do.

Then one day Danny, in attempting to parent precious little Brittney, said, “Do you want me to give you something to cry about?” In that moment, his father, who left his family when he was 6 years old, popped out of his mouth, landed on the living room floor, and was going to raise Danny’s daughter. It scared him! He thought, “How can someone I don’t even know have such an influence on the way I see things and the way I am going to treat this child? How in the world is my father coming secretly back into my life? How is my father, who only met Brittney once as a baby and has never talked to her, going to influence her life?” The answer: through Danny! A stranger was going to influence his family through the foundation that were laid very early and very long ago in his life.

  72. The word “imitate” underlined in the third paragraph most probably means ______.

  A. copy B. analyse C. defeat D. comment

  73. According to Danny, the biggest challenge of raising children is that ______.

  A. the children are very naughty.

  B. they have no clue on how to do it.

  C. they themselves were parented by foreigners.

  D. the grandparents want to raise their children.

  74. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. Danny and Sheri are good parents in that they know exactly how to raise children.

  B. Brittney is their most precious one among all the three children.

  C. You need a license to have more than one child in California.

  D. Danny’s father has an influence on Danny’s children though they don’t live together.

  75. What does Danny think of the way his parents raised him?

  A. He likes it but is still trying to find other good ways of raising children.

  B. He thinks it wonderful and wants to raise his own children in the same way.

  C. He dislikes it and is treating his own children in a completely different way.

  D. He doesn’t like it but can’t help treating his own children in the same way.
