  洛阳市2015-2016高二上学期期末考试英语答案(1)

A ten-year-old boy from Howell, Michigan America is being called a hero due to his persistence that led to saving the life of an elderly neighbor. The chain of events unfolded late in the evening on Sunday, January 26th, 2014 when Danny Dipietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his dad.

That’s when the young boy noticed an open garage and a figure that he believed was a dog outside an apartment near his house. Given the extremely cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of overlooking it like most kids at his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, go to examine what was going on. Dawn tried to convince Danny that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.

Dawn finally gave in and decided to take a walk to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny’s premonition (预感). Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment she noticed a garage that was wide open and a bent figure, waving madly. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog that the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge, one of her neighbors. The 80-year-old had slipped on some ice in her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up.

Dawn rushed home to get her husband for help and called 911. The two then returned with some blankets to cover Ms. St. Onge, while they waited for the ambulance to arrive. Though still in hospital, the elderly woman is recovering well and grateful to Danny for his premonition.

There is a saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." What one person considers beauty may not be beautiful to another. When we talk about beauty in people, we often refer to their physical attractiveness. Of course, a beautiful or handsome face is pleasant to look at. But to me beauty is not only something that pleases the eyes, but also pleases the other senses and the mind. I think true beauty makes you see beyond the lovely sight. It will give you insight (深刻的了解) or realization of something interesting beyond just the outward appearance.

The most memorable "beautiful people" are those who have attractive personalities behind the pretty faces. In one of my previous classes, there were two beautiful girls, Sue and Lin. Both had almost perfect faces and slim figures. But Lin was used to getting her own way. She felt that her looks could help her get anything she wanted, especially among the boys. Sue, on the other hand, treated her beauty in a matter-of-fact way and she was nice to everyone. She was also a member of the debating team. Her personality was mostly accepted by others and it made her a more outstanding beauty than Lin.

Inner beauty is another kind of beauty that attracts people greatly. People who have beauty have attained inner peace. They care about their fellowmen, and try to right the injustices in this world. Two well-known personalities who are typical examples of this are Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa. Mandela is willing to sacrifice his life and freedom to obtain equal rights for the blacks in South Africa. Mother Theresa's mission is to help the poorest of the world's poor. This inner beauty makes the world a better place.

  8. When we talk about beauty in people, we often refer to _____.

  A. the beauty of eyes B. something beyond the lovely sight

  C. something that pleases our eyes D. inner beauty

  9. What does the underlined sentence "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" mean?

  A. Beauty is a matter of a person's taste and judgment.

  B. Beautiful people are very popular.

  C. Everybody hopes for beauty.

  D. Beauty attracts people's eyes.

  10. According to the passage, why did the author think Sue was more beautiful than Lin?

  A. Sue had a perfect face.

  B. Sue had a good character.

  C. Sue became more and more slender.

  D. Lin treated her beauty in a matter-of-fact way.

  11. What's the author's opinion on beauty?

  A. Beauty is a perfect face and a slender figure.

  B. Beauty is something that pleases the eyes.

  C. Beauty is an attractive personality behind the pretty faces.

  D. Inner beauty doesn't attract people.

Studies show that you may be lied to every day anywhere from 10 to 200 times. We say, “Nice song.” “Honey, you don’t look fat in that, no.” But another study showed that strangers lied three times within the first 10 minutes of meeting each other. We lie more to strangers than we lie to coworkers. Men lie eight times more about themselves than they do other people. Women lie more to protect other people. If you’re married, you’re going to lie to your wife/ husband in one out of every 10 communications. If you’re unmarried, that number drops to three. But look, if at some point you got lied to, it’s because you agreed to get lied to. In other words, the truth about lying: lying is a cooperative act. Not all lies are harmful. Sometimes we’re willing to lie for the sake of social dignity , maybe to keep a private secret.

Lying is complex. It is woven into the fabric of our daily and business lives. We’re deeply disturbed by the truth. We explain it, sometimes for very good reasons, other times just because we don’t understand the gaps between ideals and realities in our lives. We’re against lying, but secretly we’re for it in ways that our society has practiced for centuries and centuries. It’s as old as breathing. It’s part of our culture and history. Think the stories from Dante, Shakespeare, the Bible, News of the World.

Lying has great value to the evolution of human being. Researchers have long known that the more intelligent the species, the more likely it is to lie. We human like to become leaders. It starts really early. How early? Well, babies will pretend to cry, pause, wait to see who’s coming and then go right back to crying. One-year-olds learn hiding truth. Two-year-olds bluff (虚张声势). Five-year-olds lie outright and try to control by flattery (讨好). Nine-year-olds, masters of covering up.

  12. From Para.1 we learn that lying is very ________

  A. abnormal B. common C. ridiculous D. unbearable

  13. when does a lie work according to the passage?

  A. the liar’s words are sweet enough B. it is told to a complete stranger

  C. someone gives the liar cooperation D. we lie to keep a private secret

  14. Lying is complex because ________.

  A. it exists in many parts of our life B. it is the whole part of great culture

  C. people are in support of lying D. ancient stories are full of lies

  15. The examples of kids lying in the passage show ________.

  A. lying is a sign of intelligent development B. lying is good for children’s growing up

  C. at what age children begin to tell lies D. 9-year-old children are masters of lying
