  A

This summer I volunteered at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan and had a once in a lifetime chance to get within three feet. Born and raised in America, very rarely had I ever seen a panda. I had expected this moment ever since my mother told me that we would be volunteering at the Center.

When my cousin and I arrived at the Center and received our uniforms and gloves, any nervousness I had felt during the car ride quickly faded and changed into excitement. Our first task was to clean up the panda’s cage. Although it was a boring job, it was interesting to be the panda’s living area and see how big the animals really are. Pandas actually fear heat, so the Center provides each animal with an ice block to keep it comfortable.

When it was time to feed the pandas, the keeper gave us five pieces of food each, which consisted of bamboo, carrots, or bread to feed to a one-year-old male. Never having dreamed of being so close to a panda, I was delighted by the action and after listening to it munch(用力嚼)on the food, hurriedly offered a piece more.

Next, we watched a video on China’s goal to help giant pandas back into the wild. It explained China’s efforts to raise them to increase the population, and detailed measures taken to train the pandas to enter their nature reserve once again.

The workers had to spend lots of time teaching the animals how to live in nature and guaranteeing their safety at all times. I am grateful to have been able to volunteer for a day and will treasure the experience for the rest of my life.

  21. How did the writer feel on the way to the Center?

  A.Excited. B.Nervous. C.Bored. D.Calm.

  22. Which of the following is delighted to the writer?

  A.Wearing uniforms. B.Cleaning the cages.

C.Feeding the panda. D.Watching the video.

  23. Why does the Center raise the giant pandas?

A.To attract more volunteers. B.To keep them comfortable.

C.To help them back to nature. D.To gain more experience.

Goldfish have pretty boring lives, so maybe it’s a good thing they can only concentrate for nine seconds! But according to new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span(时长)is getting shorter...and it’s all because of technology.

“We move quickly from one site to another on the web,” says Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, “and we are losing the ability to concentrate .” With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distraction(分心)too: email, instant messaging and quickie moves on websites.

Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,” says Julia Wood, from London. “Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they concentrate on one subject for longer.”

Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect: “The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.”

But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says: “On the web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.”

24.Why does the writer mention “goldfish”?

  A.To analyze data. B.To introduce a topic.

C.To settle problems. D.To suggest a way out.

25.What may cause a shorter attention span according to Dr. Ted Selker?

A.Skipping around the internet. B.Time to digest information.

C.Traditional methods of reading. D.Making decisions.

  26. What will help students overcome s short attention span?.

  A.Receiving emails. B.Texting messages.

C.Reading more books. D.Watching quickie movies.

  27. What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly?

  A.Cautious. B.Unfavorable. C.Skeptical. D.Supportive.

Want to help fight global warming? Take off your tie, says the Italian health ministry.

It has urged employers to let their staff dress casually at work in the summer so that the air conditioning can be turned down.

“Taking your tie off immediately lowers the body temperature by 2 or 3 degrees centigrade,” the ministry said in a statement. “Allowing a more sensible use of air conditioning brings about electricity savings and protects the environment.”

It called on all public and private offices to let employees wear no tie during heat waves like the one that has brought Africa-like temperatures to many parts of Italy this week.

The move echoes(回应)a similar action from Italy’s biggest oil group, ENI, which told its staff earlier this month they need not wear a tie at work.

The tie makers, however, were left hot under the collar.

“Italy confirms that it is a strange country ,” Flavia Cima said angrily in a letter to financial daily IL SOLE 24 ORE under the headline: “I, tie maker, am responsible for global warming.”

“We can now happily continue with our lifestyle, using cars, consuming fuel, heating and cooling our homes at leisure. On one condition: we should not wear a tie while we do so,” he wrote.

“I should have listened to my friends and become an oil producer instead.”

Italy is one of the European Union’s worst performers on the pollution front and is among the EU countries expected to exceed(超出)their greenhouse gas emission(排放)targets.

  28. What’s the purpose of the move of taking off ties?

A.To dress casually. B.To fight global warming.

C.To keep the body temperature. D.To improve working conditions.

  29. Who first encouraged employees to take off ties?

A.ENI. B.Flavio Cima. C.A financial daily. D.The Italian health ministry.

  30. What does the underlined part “hot under the collar” in Paragraph 6 probably

  mean?

  A.Angry. B.Speechless. C.Delighted. D.Puzzled.

  31. Which of the following is TRUE about Flavio Cima?

A.He stands by the oil group. B.He agrees with the ministry.

C.He admits his responsibility. D.He argues against taking off ties.

Losing weight is tough. For most people, it requires a change in diet, a change in exercise habits, and a change in attitude. 36

  l Set healthy goals.

If you’re overweight and want to change that, the first step is deciding what your target weight is. 37

  l Start small.

Making major behavior modifications(行为矫正)isn’t something that happens overnight. 38 Commit to eating 5 servings of vegetables a day and exercising 2 days a week for the first week, then add a little more each week.

l Track your diet and exercise.

Now it’s time to start working toward that goal. The best way to stick with your diet and exercise rules is to track it. 39 Or you can do it the old fashioned way and keep a written food and exercise journal. Find what works for you and write down what you’ve accomplished every day.

  l 40

Every month you should take a look at your goal and see what type of progress you’ve made toward accomplishing it. If you’re not where you want to be, make minor adjustments. Try doing different exercises or cutting back on certain types of foods that you may be eating too much of.

Losing weight and keeping it off is a highly personal thing. Find what works for you and stick with it.

  A.Evaluate and adjust.

B.Here’s how you can accomplish all the three.

C.You might as well start with your own attitude.

D.There are plenty of Apps that allow you to do this.

E.What steps are you going to take to achieve your goal.

F.So start with 1-2 things per week and wok up from there.

I was born in a town called Blackburn, in the northwest of England, and lived there till I left home 61 the age of eighteen. My parents had moved to England from India during 62 1970s.

As a child, I went to my local school and, of course 63 (speak) English with a local accent. But home was very different: we lived in a kind of “little India”, with a huge extended family of uncles and aunts. I remember 64 (feel) part of this big thing called “family”, and an even 65 (big) thing called “India”. I suppose my family 66 (real) influenced me while I was growing up. They used to talk about India as “home”--even 67 at that time I had never been there!

To me, it doesn’t seem at all strange to grow up as part of two cultures. I am always thinking that growing up with two cultures is a gift, not a 68 (advantage). Now as a mother, I want my child 69 (get) in contact(接触)with her Indian roots too, so we are planning to visit there later this year. All her Indian 70 (cousin) are expecting to meet her!

I’d like to tell you something about my volunteering activities during the First National Youth Games held in our province last October. After training for a few days, I was sent to the railway station with some other volunteers to serve the passengers from home and abroad. We worked from 3 pm to 5 pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which lasted for a month. Knowing my city well, I was responsible to tell the passengers at the exit how to get to their destinations. In addition to offering them information about hotels, traffic, scenic spots, etc, I mainly guided the passengers to taxis or the right buses. The passengers appreciated my warm-hearted service, which greatly inspired me. I’ve learned a lot from my volunteering experience.

W: I wish I could move out of my apartment today. The dishwasher, the fridge, and the air conditioning; nothing works well. And the landlady just turns a deaf ear to me.

M: I remember you have signed an agreement with her. Maybe you can find what you can do under the agreement.

W: Good idea! Thanks for your advice.

M: Betty, fancy seeing you here. I didn’t know you took the underground.

W: I don’t usually. It’s just that I’ m fed up with driving and paying so much for gas, and the

buses are crowded and unreliable. So I thought I’d give this a try.

M:I know what you mean. I started taking the subway two years ago, and it’s wonderful! Both

my Home and our office are within easy reach of the stations. When I was driving, I wasn’t

  getting nearly as much exercise.

W: Exactly! Plus, the subway’s cheaper than gas in the long run. And the trains leave every 15 minutes, so if I miss one, I don’t have to wait long for another.

  (Text 10)

Hi, everyone! The topic of my speech today is “Four-day Workweek”As we know, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. Now employees have the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths of their normal pay. This would benefit both the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. In this way, employees would feel more rested and watchful. As a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Thus, the shortened workweek would increase company profits. Companies can hire more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be done without more pay. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If a lot of full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be given to others. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. As long as the employees could accept a lower salary, they could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, following private interests, or enjoying various forms of relaxation.
